Frequently asked questions

What is a subluxation?

A subluxation occurs when the spinal bones (vertebrae) lose their normal motion and position. The spinal misalignments (subluxations) cause impaired function of the nervous system, muscles and soft tissue. Many different stresses can cause subluxations inlcluding car accidents, prolonged sitting, sprains, strains, emotional stress and chemical imbalances.

What is an adjustment?

A Chiropractic adjustment is the technique the Chiropractor uses to move a joint that is subluxated, fixated or not moving properly. It is a specific force in a precise direction.

I have arthritis, can I still benefit from Chiropractic treatment?

Clients with osteoarthritis can benefit from Chiropractic care as it helps to restore movement to degenerated joints and reduce pain. It does not ‘cure’ arthritis but it can help the arthritic joint function as a normal joint would, allowing the client to get on with their normal activities with minimal limitation.

Why do children need Chiropractic care?

Spinal trauma can begin during childbirth, so it is wise to have your newborn checked by a Chiropractor. Many childhood activities can cause spinal problems. Regular checkups can detect any changes in the spine. For example, scoliosis found early in children can be treated to help avoid problems in adulthood.

Is it ok to have Chiropractic care if I’m pregnant?

Yes. Chiropractic’s drug-free approach is perfectly suited to expectant/breastfeeding mothers. The changes in posture during pregnancy can place huge strain on the spine and pelvis which can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can gently reduce this postural strain allowing for greater comfort right up to labour.

Do I have a pinched nerve?

When the spine is misaligned and the joints are not moving freely, this puts pressure on the nerves. The nerves don’t usually become “pinched” as such, they are irritated by the malfuctioning joint. This causes decreased nerve function and can result in pain, tingling, pins and needles or numbness.

Do I need X-Rays?

Each patient is assessed individually. The Chiropractor will take into consideration your symptoms, the cause and how long it has been there, before deciding whether x-rays are required. If x-rays are needed, you will be referred to the radiology clinic.

I have osteoporosis – can I go to the Chiropractor?

Due to the low force of the Activator technique, osteoporotic clients are ideal candidates for Chiropractic care in our office.

How long will I need Chiropractic Care?

The number of sessions required will depend on various factors including; type of injury, how long the problem has been there, client’s age and the condition of the spine. Chronic problems may need ongoing supportive care as there are often associated degenerative changes in the spine. Periodic Chiropractic check ups can help clients maintain their spine and good health.
